Because early detection and treatment is still a woman’s best defense against breast cancer, NuHealth’s Breast Imaging Center offers the ideal combination of technology and clinical expertise. We provide the latest in diagnostic imaging and treatment options for women of all ages. Our new all-digital mammography unit quickly provides a highly detailed picture that can be magnified to zoom in on potential abnormalities. In fact, recent studies have shown that digital mammography is significantly better in screening women under 50.
The Breast Imaging Center is also equipped to provide breast ultrasound exams, breast MRIs and digital stereotactic breast biopsies. We are also the only imaging center in the area to include a clinical breast exam as a standard part of every mammography. After careful review by our team of radiologists and other breast health professionals, you may be referred back to your primary physician or scheduled to consult with other available specialists from NuHealth’s oncology, breast surgery or plastic surgery departments.
NuHealth also brings its commitment to better breast health out into the community via the NuHealth Mammography Van, which regularly visits NuHealth’s Family Health Centers, as well as other sites throughout Nassau County.
Above all, we understand that a breast exam and what it reveals can be a nerve-wracking experience for any woman. Our goal is to help you learn what you need to make the right decisions for you, schedule necessary follow-up appointments and give you the support you need to carry on.
NuHealth’s General Obstetrics services are widely regarded as one of the region’s top practices, with the lowest Caesarean section rates of all Long Island hospitals with OB practices today. Prenatal care is offered at both Nassau Medical Associates office in East Meadow, and our Family Health Centers, and each patient establishes a relationship with her own physician and an exceptional nursing staff trained to care for both mother and child. We also hold regular classes in childbirth preparation, breast feeding and infant care, encouraging parents to share their concerns and experience, and provide mutual support.
At our NUMC practice, a complete array of services can be found under a single roof, including ultrasound, a non-stress testing lab, and Level II sonograms. Subspecialists in high-risk obstetrics are on hand for immediate consultation. NUMC’s highly-secure Labor & Delivery area includes 10 home-like birthing rooms, as well as the only hospital-based suite with a water-birthing tub on Long Island. Most important, our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is well-prepared for any complications, with a staff of specialists in neonatology, pediatric cardiology and pediatric surgery ready to intervene when needed. So no matter what challenges present themselves, our patients can rest assured that they and their babies are in caring, competent hands.
Above all, NuHealth’s obstetrics staff wants to guide our mothers, fathers and loved ones through what will be one of the most important events of their lives — from that breathless wait for confirmation of her pregnancy, to the thrill of first hearing the fetal heartbeat, and on through those all-important bonding hours after birth. We encourage you to schedule a visit to our Labor & Delivery area and join the NuHealth Women’s Care Network on Facebook, where you can ask questions of our staff and share and compare experiences with current and former patients.
General Gynecological Service
NuHealth’s General Gynecology practice is focused on safeguarding the health and well-being of women of all ages. We provide a full array of gynecological services at both our Nassau University Medical Center practice, most of which are also available close to home in our Family Health Centers. We emphasize preventative health and personal health management through smart choices, self-examination, regular check-ups and screening for breast, ovarian, cervical and other cancers.
NuHealth’s general gynecologists also help women with all aspects of family planning and pregnancy options. We offer both minimally-invasive tubal ligation and the new, non-surgical Essure sterilization procedure that can be performed in minutes with no hospital stay required. We also provide testing and treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs).
NuHealth is also well-prepared to medically or surgically manage the full spectrum of gynecological disease. Our Colposcopy Center at Nassau University Medical Center is one of the region’s most important resources for the evaluation and treatment for abnormal pap smears. And our surgical specialists are expert in such advanced methods as transabdominal and transvaginal surgery, operative laparascopy (minimally invasive surgery), operative hysteroscopy, cryotherapy and the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP).
At NuHealth, we understand that a woman’s gynecological health is not just an important matter, but an intensely personal and private one. Our goal is to ensure that every woman has ready access to personally and culturally-sensitive one-on-one care, and the information and support they need to make educated choices about their lives.
NuHealth’s division of Gynecologic Oncology provides care for women with cancers that attack the female reproductive system, organs, including the ovaries, uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva. Each year, approximately 82,000 women are diagnosed with cancer of the reproductive organs, including ovarian cancer and cervical cancer.
The division provides a full range of services for female oncology patients, from diagnosis to treatment by medical or surgical intervention. In some cases, it is possible to minimize discomfort and scarring through minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery. The division also performs the LEEP procedure, which uses state-of-the-art technology to remove precancerous cells from the cervix more easily.

NuHealth’s gynecologic surgical specialists have performed more than 1,000 surgeries without a single external incision. These minimally-invasive surgical procedures employ a special miniature camera on a thin cable (endoscope) with instruments designed to be inserted through natural openings in the body. Endoscopic surgery greatly eases the patient’s recovery and significantly reduces the risk of post-operative infection and other complications of traditional surgery.
Endoscopic procedures performed at Nassau University Medical Center include treatments for fibroid and ovarian disease complicated by large cyst and severe adhesions, infertility, and urinary incontinence.
