Family Medicine

At NuHealth, we’re building healthier communities, one family at a time. In fact, improving access to high quality family and primary care medicine is at the heart of our mission to provide high-quality, essential care to everyone, at every stage of life. Because we know that the best way to reduce health care costs is to reduce the need for costly health care services, we want to help every Long Islander find a “medical home” – a practice where they can have their own personal physician whose first objective is to keep them healthy and out of the hospital.

  • More scheduled appointments, less “cattle call” clinics.
  • A welcoming, experienced staff of physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals who can easily consult with NuHealth’s comprehensive staff of specialists.
  • A complete array of services available at Nassau University Medical Center and NuHealth’s five Family Health Centers.
  • For those needing help obtaining care and coverage, NuHealth’s NuCare program is breaking down the barriers to good health.
  • Commitment to improving wellness through better patient education.

Allergies

Allergic reactions are actually our body’s overreaction to the presence of generally harmless substances. That doesn’t make allergies any less annoying…and even dangerous. If your family practitioner believes you or a family member may be allergic to one or more irritants, he or she will help you connect with the immunologists at Nassau University Medical Center. They provide testing, diagnosis and management of all types of allergies, including:

  • Allergic Rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Asthma
  • Contact Dermatitis
  • Drug Allergies
  • Food Allergies
  • Immune Disorders
  • Insect Allergies
  • Mast Cell Disorders
  • Sinusitis
  • Skin Allergies

To make an appointment for allergy testing, diagnosis and management, please call (516) 486-NUMC (6862).

Nutrition

America is in the midst of an epidemic of obesity that has caused an alarming increase in many serious, potentially life-threatening health problems, including hypertension, Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It has also been linked to infertility and a higher prevalence of colon, prostate, endometrial, and, possibly, breast cancer. In fact, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, MD and other health care leaders have labeled obesity as the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States.

At NuHealth, encouraging healthier eating habits is a key element in our overall approach to wellness. Your NuHealth physician or other health professional may refer you to our registered dieticians and nutrition counselors to help develop a personalized eating plan. We also regularly hold free classes at Nassau University Medical Center and our Family Health Centers to help families make changes in diet and lifestyle that will lead to longer, healthier and happier lives.

General Pediatrics

At NuHealth, we believe in the message behind that timeworn adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” That means our first priority is encouraging healthy habits that will help your child avoid the need for anything more than routine check-ups and care for the typical childhood maladies. But the general and primary care pediatricians working at Nassau University Medical Center and NuHealth’s Family Health Centers are ready to do far more. They are expert diagnosticians…a task made all the more difficult by the inability of many of their patients to accurately describe their symptoms – or even speak at all!

Some of the services provided by NuHealth’s general and primary care pediatricians and their staff include:

  • School Physicals
  • Children's Vaccines
  • Well-Baby and Well-Child Check-ups
  • Sick Child Visits
  • Screening for Developmental Problems
  • Education on Children’s and Adolescent’s Health Issues

Best of all, no matter where your NuHealth pediatrician practices, he or she is part of an entire team of pediatric specialists based at Nassau University Medical Center. That means expert help and specialized services are always easy to arrange.

But it just might be that one of the most important things NuHealth’s pediatricians and pediatric nurses do is get to know you and your family, building a relationship of trust that goes a long way toward soothing the concerns of parents and children alike. That trust and ongoing doctor-patient-parent relationship helps us obtain more complete and accurate patient histories and track small problems before they become big ones.

Primary Care & Family Medicine

NuHealth’s primary care physicians (also known as family practitioners, internists, GP’s and other titles) are at the frontlines of health care, and they will play an increasingly important role as the guardians of wellness as national health care reforms are implemented. In addition to tending to the common maladies of childhood and adult medicine, your NuHealth primary care physician is the connecting point between you and the complete array of specialized medical services available at Nassau University Medical Center. In fact, one of the key advantages to working with a NuHealth family practitioner is his or her ability to easily consult and exchange medical images, histories and test results with top specialists.

Whether you choose a physician in our primary care practice at Nassau University Medical Center or in one of the NuHealth Family Health Centers near you, you will establish a relationship with your own doctor who will provide the health care services most often in demand by growing families, including:

  • Complete Physical Examinations
  • Annual Check-ups
