Historical Overview

NuHealth, known formerly as Nassau Health Care Corporation, is a Long Island-based health system committed to delivering coordinated medical care, disease and lifestyle management to everyone, at every stage of life. Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), which began in 1935 as Meadowbrook Hospital (then a 200-bed, general hospital in then rural East Meadow, New York) - has become the heart of this unique health organization serving the public, with multiple centers of care. This 1,200-bed health care system is moving toward a new model of care that emphasizes excellent essential hospital and ambulatory services and primary care.

Growing out of community need, the original Meadowbrook Hospital developed into Nassau County Medical Center by 1974, expanding into a new 19 story dynamic care building with 530 beds. Meadowbrook Hospital was then renamed Nassau County Medical Center, a safety net level I trauma center and teaching hospital. NCMC was renamed Nassau University Medical Center in 2001.

By 1999, Nassau Health Care Corporation, a public benefit corporation of New York State, was created to assume control of Nassau County Medical Center, the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility and five community health centers and which are now co-operated with the LI Federally qualified Health Center, Inc. NHCC become known as the NuHealth System in 2008. Making health care more accessible, affordable and patient-friendly for young families, hardworking singles and seniors with growing health care needs on Long Island is at the core of NuHealth's mission and vision.

NUMC has matured into a 530-bed tertiary care teaching hospital which serves as the primary source of medical care for thousands of Nassau County residents. In addition to its own extensive medical and surgical capabilities, NUMC's affiliation with the North Shore-LIJ Health System allows NUMC to transfer or refer patients requiring highly specialized medicine outside of care offered at NUMC. On-site partnerships with some of the region's top specialists, including the North Shore-LIJ cardiology team, expands NUMC's ability to bring highly specialized medicine to NUMC's patient population.

NUMC Receives 2012 Coveted Press Ganey 'Top Improver Award' -
Patient Satisfaction in Emergency Department

NUMC's multi-disciplinary team effort to improve patient experience and efficiency in the Emergency Department has received top laurels by Press Ganey for 2012. The industry advisory has determined NUMC as most improved in patient flow, expediting triage, reducing wait times and enhancing overall patient satisfaction.

Streamlining the registration process and improving communication between ED clinicians has cleared the way for new staffing patterns which best utilize critical care delivery during peak hours. NUMC's patient flow team is applauded for decreasing average door-to-ED time from 60 to 35 minutes; decreasing average door-to-Triage time from 14 to 7 minutes; and significantly decreasing the number of patients leaving against medical advice. Details of NUMC's award-winning performance improvement campaign are spotlighted by Press Ganey at http://www.pressganey.com/Libraries/Award_Winners_2012/ti_ps-ed_Nassau_University_Medical_Center.sflb.ashx.

NUMC RECEIVES TOP SCORE "A" IN PATIENT SAFETY BY LEAPFROG GROUP

East Meadow, NY.....Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announces that the Nassau University Medical Center has received the top score of "A" in patient safety by the Leapfrog Group. The Hospital Safety Score was created and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national leader and advocate in hospital transparency. The safety measures considered in the Hospital Safety Score represent the very basic blocks of medical care, such a hand-washing, computerized medication control and nurse staffing levels.

"We are proud and delighted to receive the top "A" score by the Leapfrog Group in patient safety. Our staff has been committed to consistently following patient safety protocols and improving quality of care by reducing preventable medical mistakes as patients deserve to be in the safest hospital possible. Our top score demonstrates our transparency and our diligence in delivering a better and safer quality of care to all our patients," indicated Gianelli.

"NUMC achieved this score through rigorous adherence to evidence based practice guidelines and implementation of a variety of strategic and departmental initiatives focusing on patient safety, outcomes and transparency," stated Maureen P. Shannon, CPHQ, CSHA, MHA, MBA, vice president of quality management.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent, national not-for-profit organization founded more than a decade ago by the nation's leading employers and private healthcare experts, striving to make giant "leaps" forward in the safety, quality and affordability of healthcare in the U.S. by promoting transparency and value-based hospital incentives. The Hospital Safety Score uses national performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to produce a single score representing the hospital's overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. In addition, secondary data from the American Hospital Association's Annual Survey was used. The Hospital Safety Score included 26 measures, all currently in use by national measurement and reporting programs. A 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine gave the Leapfrog founders an initial focus - reducing preventable medical mistakes. The report found that up to 98,000 Americans die every year from preventable medical errors made in hospitals alone.

Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, NuHealth's executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director, congratulated NuHealth staff on this prestigious patient safety recognition by the Leapfrog Group: "Congratulations on achieving the top patient safety score, a result of our adherence to safer practices and the implementation of best practices and evidence-based protocols to help avoid hospital acquired infections, medication errors and procedural mistakes. This top score reflects the priority that leadership has placed on safer outcomes with systems and policies in effect to achieve them."

ABOUT LEAPFROG:

The Leapfrog Group is a voluntary program aimed at mobilizing employer purchasing power to alert America's health industry that big leaps in health care safety, quality and customer value will be recognized and rewarded. Among other initiatives, Leapfrog works with its employer members to encourage transparency and easy access to health care information as well as rewards for hospitals that have a proven record of high quality care. The Leapfrog Hospital Survey is the gold standard for comparing hospitals' performance on the national standards of safety, quality, and efficiency that are most relevant to consumers and purchasers of care. Hospitals that participate in The Leapfrog Hospital Survey achieve hospital-wide improvements that translate into millions of lives and dollars saved.

I would like to share a paragraph included in today's Crain's Health Pulse, which highlights NuHealth's new family medicine residency program, a LI Federally Qualified Health Center, Inc. based residency program, obtained under a recent federal program. The paragraph is included below:

New Primary Care Residency

The NuHealth System in East Meadow, L.I., launched a new family medicine residency program for graduates of schools of osteopathic medicine. Dr. Peter Guiney, chair of the family medicine department at Nassau University Medical Center, will direct the program, which began July 1 and has training slots for 14 doctors. The venture is meant to meet the growing demand for primary care doctors, particularly in underserved communities, according to a statement from NuHealth President Arthur Gianelli. Clinical training will be primarily at NUMC's Family Health Centers in Elmont and New Cassel. The program is fully accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, a spokeswoman for NUMC said.
