Message From The Chairperson

The Department of Medicine, the busiest in the hospital, provides a comprehensive range of consultative, diagnostic, preventive and treatment services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings in a culturally and linguistically sensitive manner. The department contains the divisions of Rheumatology, Nephrology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease, Hospitalist & Academic Medicine, Endocrinology & Metabolism, Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Allergy and Immunology. We have the largest residency training program in the hospital with fellowships in Nephrology, Gastroenterology and Endocrinology. This year the Internal Medicine residency received a full six year accreditation for the training program. Cardiology has recently become a Department through its affiliation with the North Shore LIJ Health System where a fellow from their training program is assigned monthly to NUMC for educational and patient care purposes.

Our departmental mantra is that "We are better than we were yesterday but not as good as we'll be tomorrow." We are striving to improve the quality of the care of our patients, create an atmosphere of patient satisfaction and to improve the overall outcomes of our patients. To that end we strive to express the corporation's values in everything we do- CARING.

  • Create a positive impression about yourself and the hospital
  • Anticipate and respond; show that you really care
  • Respect for all patients and their families
  • Always maintain your integrity and compassion
  • Maintain a neat, clean, and safe environment
  • Always go above and beyond

Recent accomplishments include:

  • Expansion of the hospitalist service to improve inpatient care
  • Opening of a new and expanded, state-of-the-art hemodialysis center at A. Holly Patterson
  • Expanded cardiology services in affiliation with the NSLIJ system including electrophysiologic services, around the clock cardiac catheterization and a new heart failure service
  • Establishment of a Medical Procedure Team, The Zaki Hossain Center of Excellence for Hypertension, Diabetes, and Vascular Disease
