Centers of Care

Nassau University Medical Center

Nassau University Medical Center is a 530-bed tertiary care teaching hospital that has been the primary source of medical care for millions of Nassau County residents since 1935. It is also the heart of NuHealth – a Long Island-based health system committed to deliver coordinated medical care and disease and lifestyle management to everyone, at every stage of life.

In addition to its own extensive medical and surgical capabilities, NUMC is affiliated with the North Shore/LIJ Health System.  This relationship allows us to transfer or refer patients requiring highly specialized medicine.  We are even creating on-site partnerships with some of the region's top specialists, including the North Shore-LIJ cardiology team, expanding our ability to bring highly specialized medicine to patients within our walls.  No matter what the diagnosis, we will make sure every patient gets the care he or she needs.

Inside the Hospital

With its 19-story main tower, Nassau University Medical Center is Nassau County's tallest building and a familiar Long Island landmark. As the region's premier Level I trauma center, NUMC treats many of the County's most critically injured patients, and has long carried the responsibility of being the region's "safety net" hospital.

Some Outstanding Features Include:

  • Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center
  • Designated Stroke Center
  • Zaki Hossain Center for Hypertension, Diabetes and Vascular Disease
  • Extensive laboratory, imaging and research facilities
  • Expansive two-level Health Sciences Library
  • Interfaith chapel

The Hospital as Teacher

For more than 60 years, Nassau University Medical Center has maintained a strong commitment to medical education. We are academically affiliated with the North Shore-LIJ Health System, the Health Sciences Center of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and the soon-to-open Hofstra University School of Medicine.

As a teaching hospital, we work in partnership with our affiliates to educate medical students, train residents and provide continuing education for physicians. NUMC's highly qualified faculty, comprehensively equipped facilities and strong graduate medical education programs, combined with the challenge of serving a broad patient population in a fast-paced environment, provide an extraordinary learning experience for the next generation of medical professionals. Our educational mission fosters scholarly activity, research productivity and high standards of patient care – and our patients are the beneficiaries.

In partnership with the LI Federally-Qualified Health Centers

LI Federally-Qualified Health Centers (LIFQHC) is a non-profit, consumer-driven organization created to help address the health needs of the region’s most vulnerable populations. It is governed by 13 board members, seven of whom receive primary care at one of NuHealth’s Family Health Centers, while the remaining six are leaders of the regional non-profit community. This partnership allows us to enhance services, expand hours of operation, obtain reduced prescription pricing, and more — all to improve the quality and availability of preventative and primary care in Nassau County’s 33 medically-underserved communities.
